The squad-room went quiet at about 10.30am the next day. Alex had gone out on an errand and Ross had done a dissapearing act so Bobby took the opportunity to ring her. When the 'phone switched off' message came up Bobby panicked then remembered what Eames had said yesterday 'ring the store' so he did.
"Harper's gallery, may I......"Judith?" "Yes..Oh Bobby it's you,hello" "Do you know you're phone's still switched off?" "Hang on" and Bobby knew exactly what she was doing smiled and shook his head as he waited, (1) hunt for drawer key (2) seach in handbag for phone and (3) switch it on. "It's not now" came a breathless reply. "Good, now make sure it's switched on at all times and find somewhere else to keep it then you're not seaching all the time for it!"
"Yes sir and where do you suggest? Shall I leave it in the 'fridge maybe?"
"Might be a bit cold for it in there and knowing you, you would'nt hear it and even if you did you'd still go seaching in your handbag for it"
"And mr. clever-cloggs I'd forget it was in the 'fridge and go home without it!"
"That's true, better leave it as it is" and they both laughed
"You sound so much better" he said when they stopped laughing "Are you?"
"Yes thankyou, much better. It was that 'healing hand' that did the trick. I think we should 'bottle it' and sell it here at the store"
"No,no,no my 'healing hand' is only for certain people with sore 'tummies' not the genaral public"
"Gosh!! I am honoured" and she giggled
He loved to hear her giggle,made him feel all warm and happy. 'my god Goren you're getting as bad as a love-sick teenager' he said to himself. "Now about this Ballet you're taking me to on monday, what have I to wear because I take it it's not teeshirt and jeans?"
She giggled again "No it's not teeshirt and jeans, but then again it would be fun to go like that. Bobby you don't have to go if you don't want to"
"I said I would go and go I will.Now what have I to wear?"
"Just one of your dark suits and white shirt. I'm only going in silk slacks and white blouse, and very flat shoes! "he laughed at that "You see it's not an openning night, it's a performance they put on for the sponsors.Some do dress-up but I like to go more casual but still smartish. You are sat for a long time and you need to be comfortable"
"Do you sponsor many things?" he asked
"I suppose we do really but the Ballet is Caroline's 'baby' really"she told him.
"Caroline?" he said and then it came to him "Of course you're brothers wife,sorry"
"It was'nt worth her flying over,though she would have liked to,,just for the Ballet but as I'm here in New York she thought I could go and represent her, and the store of course "
"Do you like Ballet?"
"No not really,well it's alright for a change. It will be a good show though, there're a very good company,I think you'll like it"
"Men in tights,I wonder" he said and she laughed at that and said to him "Well Bobby Goren you'll just have to close your eyes when the male dancers come on, won't you!" laughing some more "Going to go now Bobby see you later, bye" and she was gone.
He was still smileing at what she'd said when Alex came back "Come on Goren body found in a back alley at south-side"
'Back to the real world he thought', picked up his things and followed Eames outside.
